In this animation I wanted to explore the visual and auditory hallucinations experience by schizophrenics. My starting point was based on an uncle who is a life-long schizophrenic. He is often paranoid about objects such as radios, light fixtures and fittings and thinks they are transmitting messages or bugged. Because some schizophrenics fear it, I was interested in the radio as a source of messages about schizophrenia. While doing the project I listened and recorded several radio interviews on the topic. I cut them up and put them over the top of static I’d recorded off the radio. I then listened to the background sounds I’d recorded and looked for triggers for visual or auditory hallucinations – things like music, or loud static.
